Environmental McCarthyism in Utah

I'm all about saving the environment.

My husband's 2006 VW Diesel Jetta gets 40 miles to the gallon.

We just received a letter from the county that an anonymous tipster said it was blowing out black smoke and destroying mother earth.

We now have to drive to a county inspection service, pay $50 for that service to prove that are car was not tampered with.

The county will not release the name of this tipster. Despite what the constitution says, we can not face our accusers.

You all know how much I hate anonymous commenters. Cowards that throw poison darts, self-righteous commentary and criticism with out taking any accountability for their words.

It had to be a holier than thou Prius driver. Good thing we turned in our aluminum cans to be recycled last week so we have some cash on hand to pay for this environmental zealot. I'm almost tempted to NOT recycle my cardbord this month. That'll show 'em!

What the he#$!!?????

What happens if you don't do anything about it? that is the biggest load of crap that I have ever seen.

Would it be possible to find out what all the congressmen are driving and turn in their cars, just to make them pay their $50 for passing that ridiculous law? That is sad and scary.

If we don't get it reinspected it gets impounded. And the county inspection is only open till 4pm

Even California doesn't have that law and we have a great deal of stupid laws. (The protect a tiny fish ruling by a judge. Your "Save the fish blog.") Maybe we do have that law but no one really cares.

And this is why I detest all things green.

What a ridiculous law. The potential for abuse is insane. What can we do to get it repealed?

If it will help you feel any better we can burn some old tractor tires when you visit KY...

How does Utah, of ALL places, have a law like that? How does that happen? It seems ridiculous because anyone could accuse anyone else anonymously and rack up the $50 charge.

Keep driving the Jetta. 40 mph is awesome.

Also, doesn't pretty much EVERY diesel care spew out black smoke when you hit the gas pedal too fast? I see it all the time coming out of diesel trucks (like the Dodge Ram, for example).

For crying out loud.

I'm not even going to think about telling this one to Alan. He already has enough factoid ammunition to start a revolution, and I prefer men that aren't angry.

That is irritating (and ridiculous), but as a daughter of a prius driver, I'd like to point out that the odds of it being a prius driver that "turned you in" is pretty low. Given the number of prius drivers compared to non-prius drivers.

So while I agree that you have every right to be frustrated, blame the lawmakers who came up with the stupid rule, not prius drivers (who may or may not have a holier-than-thou attitude).

That is pretty ridiculous, even for me! And we have a VW diesel as well and love our 40mpg! I think it was just someone that was jealous, haha.

This is absurd. I'd be outraged, but not at the Tipster but the complete idiot who gave these biased, clueless, likely vindictive, and anonymous Tipsters the power to rape the entirely wrong group people of significant resources. There's a politician somewhere that needs to be fired.

I tell you what ... if I was rich and knew a good constitutional lawyer.

Anyone empowered to fleece anybody like that over environmental concerns should first be required by law to prove knowlege that the visible fumes of all diesel engines are 100X better for the environment than the invisible ones from non-diesel.

What's more, all research indicates that global-dimming caused by such discharge is the #1 reason why global warming hasn't already spun out of control. It is far more scientifically substantiated than AGW and provides a serendipitous phenomena that should be greatly appreciated by environmentalists (by everyone really)... NOT fined.

And get ready for more anonymous-championed injustices. You know now Obama has a hotline for ANY clueless or vindictive tipsters to put people on "a list" who they merely suspect are misrepresenting his policies.

And so it begins. Big brother and 1984 ... just about 25 years later than originally predicted, but no worse than Orwell predicted.

Again, I'd like to encourage everyone to not blame Prius drivers or environmentalists, but rather redirect their rage at the policy and policy makers, and this frightening direction our country is heading toward. Don't take it out on the environment or green minded people (some who are indeed complete idiots), but put blame where it's due. Government needs an enema.

I think anger should be directed at both policy makers and anonymous tipster/environmentalists.
